U.S. VeteranRussell Pierce of Jamestown, Kentucky passed away peacefully at his home on October 4, 2015 at the age of ninety seven (97). He was born on August 24, 1918 in Burnetta, Pulaski County, Kentucky to the late Hugh Franklin Pierce and Lola (Tarter) Pierce.

Russell "Russ" is survived by two children, Russell Scott (and Brenda) Pierce of Jamestown, Kentucky and Karen Jane (and Dr. Henry) Smith of Russell Springs, Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bates Pierce and by his sisters, Mabel Thompson, Willie Ard, Anna Ruth Molden, Josephine Landers, and his brothers, Charlie Franklin Pierce and Hugh Noel "Jimmy" Pierce.

One sister survives, Mavis Wesley of Somerset, Kentucky.
Russell is also survived by three grandchildren, two great grandchildren and one step-great grandchild. Also surviving are a great number of nieces and nephews, who he loved greatly, along with several special cousins.

Russell Pierce entered the US Army in May of 1943 and was assigned to 371st Combat Engineer Battalion. He fought in France, Belgium and Germany, and was discharged in January of 1946. His military awards and decorations include the American Theater Ribbon; the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon (4th Award/4 Bronze Battle Stars); the Good Conduct Medal; the Meritorious Unit Award Medal; and the World War II Victory Medal. Russell participated in the Normandy Invasion, Battle of the Bulge, and the capture and stabilizing of the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen, Germany.

Russell was a seventy (70) year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 181, serving as a Business Agent for the Lexington District. Mr. Pierce held many elected positions within the local while serving the last few years as President. He was Baptized with His Lord at Jamestown Christian Church. He was a Mason and Oleika Shrine member, as well as the VFW and the American Legion.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Pierce, Robbie Pierce, Keith Pierce, Kevin Pierce, Chris Bicknell, Patrick Pierce, Doug Miller, Robert “Bob” Pierce, and Kevin James Pierce. Honorary Pallbearers will be all the men and women of Local 181, whom he served, and his beloved Shade Tree Gang at Lakewood Country Club from Ole' One Putt!

Friends may visit after 5:00PM to 8:00PM CT on Monday, October 5, at H.E. Pruitt Memory Chapel in Jamestown, KY and 10:00AM until 12 NOON EST on Tuesday, October 6 at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home in Somerset, KY.

Masonic Rights will be held at 7:OOPM Monday, October 5 at H.E. Pruitt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 6 at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home, Somerset, Kentucky. Burial with full military honors will be at Mill Springs National Cemetery at Nancy, Kentucky on October 6, 2015, with the assistance of the Russell County Honor Guard.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of a donation to the Children's Program at Jamestown Christian Church.
