Mikal immigrated to Minneapolis, MN with his family in 1909 as a young man.

He later moved with his family to Cornell, WI in 1917 where he was employed at the St. Regis Paper Mill as a master mechanic for 47 years.

He married Laura Hake on May 31, 1923. They were the parents of 4 children: Caroline May, Lauretta Ann, Jean Lenora and Grant George.

He was a member of the Norwegian Society of Texas, Sol Heim Chapter of El Paso.

He was survived by his son, Grant; 2 daughters, Lauretta and Jean; 2 brothers, Helge (Marion) and John; 15 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura; a daughter, Caroline; a brother, Gustav and 3 sisters, Dagmar, Katherine A (Fayne) Innes and Folheid (Fred) Bemis.
