Walcie Lee Rice, 89, of Crossett died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, at his residence. Born on Oct. 29, 1914, in Crossett to Andrew Lee and Elvessie Johnson Rice, he was an U. S. Army veteran of World War II, a self-employed carpenter and a member of Jarvis Chapel Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Mr. Rice was an avid hunter and loved fishing, spending many days fishing the Saline and Quachita rivers for crappie. He always grew a garden and shared his crop with family and friends, especially tomatoes and mustard greens, and also grew roses and other flowers as a hobby.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Mable C. Rice of Crossett; one son, Ronny Wayne Rice and wife Mavis of Ashdown; one daughter, Nancy Meziere and husband James of Hamburg; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Mr. Rice was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald Warren Rice; a daughter, Sylvia Burt; and a grandson, Mitchell Burt.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at the Jarvis Chapel Baptist Church with the Revs. Ray Hearron, Gayle Riles and Dale Crumby officiating. Pallbearers were Bob Burt, Mitchell Burt, Jim Meziere, Jeff Blankenship, Seth Blankenship and Mett Cobb. Interment followed at Lakewood Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett. Memorials may be made to Jarvis Chapel Baptist Church, c/o Harold Tucker, 324 Bell Branch Road, Crossett, AR 71635.
