He graduated from Sheboygan Central High School in 1934. Bill attended Mission House College (Lakeland) for three years, then transferred to UW Madison where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1938. He also attended UW Oshkosh, earning his teaching degree.

In 1941 he married HelenJean Maurer of Kohler. They enjoyed traveling, but most of all loved family get-togethers.

He was head Librarian at North High School in Sheboygan for 26 years, served as part-time Librarian at Wilson School, and worked summers at the Mead Public Library. Bill was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, and was an elder for many years. Also, for several years, he was chairman of the Town of Sheboygan Park Commission.

His favorite pastimes were reading and enjoying the outdoors. He passed his love of nature onto his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed it when his daughter, Beth, came to visit from Lake Geneva. He always loved a good cribbage game on Sunday afternoons with Kathie, Steve and John. Bill also enjoyed the "sing-alongs" at Harvest Home when John played the piano. He was always ready to go out for a hamburger with fried onions.
