Death Brings Peace To Three Aged People Highly Respected in the Community

ALL WERE EARLY SETTLERS HERE

A.F.R. EMMONS, MRS. SARAH WORTHINGTON and LEONARD H. WOODWORTH Enter the Silent Realm After Long and Useful Lives
------------------

Within twenty four hours three members of the remnant band of early settlers that first turned their energies toward the redemption of the primeval wilderness of Western Illinois to the uses of civilization, have passed over the dark river. Saturday morning the venerable Asa Emmons closed his eyes in his last sleep and at 4 o'clock the same afternoon Mrs. Sarah Worthington of this city rendered back her soul to God, and rests with the ages past....

...an epoch in the history of the settlement of Sterling is closed, so far as the labors of them who first gave their efforts toward making it a home for civilized man is concerned. She (Sarah) was the last survivor of five families that built their log cabins on the banks of Rock river, over three score years ago, and began the struggle which has borne fruit beyond their wildest dreams.

Mrs. Sarah Worthington died peacefully at 4 0'clock Saturday afternoon at the home of the Hon. Caleb C. Johnson on Locust street, where she spent the last few years of her life. The funeral will be held at 2 0'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Johnson home, Rev. Wilson E. Donaldson of the Presbyterian church being the officiating clergyman. The body of the venerable lady will be buried by the side of her husband and children in the family lot in Riverside.

The late Mrs. Worthington was in the ninety-sixth year of her age at the time of her death, and up to within a short time enjoyed excellent physical health, save the weakness attending her advanced age.

Sarah McShane was born in Philadelphia March 27, 1807 and was a member of a family of more than ordinary culture and refinement. She received an excellent education, and naturally enjoyed studies and pursuits throughout her long life...She was a devout Christian woman, and had been a member of the Presbyterian church since she was seventeen years old. She was constant in attendance at worship throughout all of her long life...she was the only remaining member of the original small band of men and women who formed the beginning of the congregation of that denomination in Sterling.

On April 24, 1834, Sarah McShane was married to Eliphalet B. Worthington, a young editor who was publishing a paper at Wilkesbarre, Pa. Three years later the young people decided to come to the new country in the great west. They started in early March, and a month later landed at Savanna from a Mississippi steamboat. Their destination was Rock River Rapids, afterwards Harrisburg and finally Sterling. There were no roads. Indian trails winding over the virgin prairies served to point the way, swamps and unbridged streams were frequent. They arrived safely and found on the site of our now beautiful city four log cabins scattered along the ravine still to be seen in the upper part of the city. One was occupied by Hezekiah Brink, another by John Ogle, the third by Samuel S. Greer and the fourth by Mr. Worthington's brother, Elijah, who had come west the year before. Another cabin soon graced the settlement, and the new family took up its burdens with the others.

Mrs. Worthington...opened the first school in Whiteside county, in the autumn of 1838... For many years Mrs. Worthington was the village school mistress...in 1841 Mr. Worthington was made post master of Harrisburg by President Tyler, and continued to hold that office through the administrations of Polk and Taylor.

There were five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Worthington who grew to maturity, but all but two of them are dead. The eldest, Anna M., wife of Lorenzo Hapgood, died many years ago. Edward L. is also dead; Emily F. widow of the late A.A. Norwood resides in Chicago, and May L., (Lukens) has long been dead. The younest daughter, Josephine, wife of C.C. Johnson is the only child residing in the city.

Mrs. Worthington was a woman of rare force of character, and unlimited energy. Her friends were many, and enemies she knew not.
