Obituary of Suzanne Spencer Hornbuckle
Suzanne Spencer Hornbuckle passed away peacefully at home on September 9, 2015. She was born to Edgar Byron and Dorothy Isabelle (Lee) Spencer on October 27, 1939 on the family farm at Wellesley Station, Latah County, Idaho. She attended Palouse, Washington schools, riding the WI&M railway "Bug" to and from school each day.

She grew up in the Palouse country and, during her high school senior year in 1956, she met her friend and future husband, Charles "Chuck" Hornbuckle. Suzanne graduated from Lewis-Clark Normal School in Lewiston, Idaho with a Teaching Certificate and immediately began her teaching career at Enterprise, Oregon in 1959. The couple married on December 26, 1959, during Suzanne's Christmas break.

In 1960, Suzanne and Chuck moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon where she taught 5th grade in the public schools there. Chuck graduated from Oregon Technical Institute and they moved to Yakima, Washington, where their two sons, Nick and Jon, were born in 1962 and 1963. The family moved to Thurston County in 1967 where Suzanne was employed at South Bay School of the North Thurston School District as an Educational Assistant for 27 years.

The couple enjoyed time with their sons, hiking the trails in western Washington and Canada. Both Suzanne and Chuck were involved in their sons' activities, Suzanne serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother and Chuck as a Cub Master.

They moved to the Littlerock area in 1974. Following their retirements in 1995 and 1997, the couple travelled, visiting newly found cousins across the country while experiencing the heritage of 17 of Suzanne's ancestors who endured the Oregon Trail between 1846 and 1860.

The couple was very active in the Tumwater Historical Association, she with the Homesteader Quilters and he as a Board Member for many years. Suzanne was a Life Member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington, and Sons and Daughters of Oregon Pioneers, and was a member of Lacey and Olympia Historical Societies, Olympia Genealogical Society and numerous other heritage groups. Suzanne received the "Heritage Award" from the South Sound Heritage Association in 2012.

She served as Regent, Vice Regent and Secretary of the Sacajawea Chapter DAR and as Secretary, Historian and Crosby House Museum Chairman of the Olympia Chapter #4 DPW, a gifted Hostess and Greeter at the historic Crosby House in Tumwater. She was a charter member (flute player and mentor) of the South Sound New Horizons Band.

Each year Suzanne set up DAR's Constitution Week display at the Timberland Library in Tumwater. She was a member of the Littlerock United Methodist Church where she chaired the Staff Parish Relations Committee and played her flute for the congregation.

She had many friends in Thurston County and surrounding area and all appreciated her willingness to be involved in numerous activities always. She had a gift of meeting and making new friends.

Her most cherished moments were spent with her husband and sons, daughters-in-laws and four grandchildren, sister and nieces, nephews and sister-in-law. She was the guiding light of the family and always had a smile. Family heritage provided much enjoyment for Suzanne and Chuck since they descended from two common Mayflower families of 1620.

Suzanne's father passed away in 1974; her mother in 1995; her brother, Larry, in 1958; granddaughter, Ruby Lee Hornbuckle, in 1999; and nephew, Anthony Young, in 2012.

Suzanne is survived by her husband, Chuck of Olympia; sons, Nick (Kathryn and granddaughter, Cleo) of Nanaimo, Canada, and Jon (Audrey, grandson Zeb, granddaughters Emily and Madeline) of Puyallup; sister, Joan Bogart; nieces, Deborah (Don) Steeley, Dorothy Lamson and Danette Lamson-Hall, all of Eugene, Oregon; nephew, Derek (Ruba) Lamson of Portland, Oregon; sister-in-law, Debbie Hornbuckle of Moscow, Idaho; and several grand nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Rock Creek Cemetery Fund, c/o Lee Nicholson, 1040 Nicholson Rd., Potlatch, ID 83855, phone: 208-875-0583; the Freeze Cemetery Fund, c/o Randy Ownbey, 1276 W.
