He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 30, 1942 in New York City, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Retail manager and also as Single, without dependents.

Melvin was "Killed In Action" when his B-24, while on a mission to Brunswick, Germany, was shot down by German fighters and crashed near Hassbergen, Germany during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
