Together again with his sweetheart! Our precious dad and grandfather passed away on September 17, 2015.

He was born to Waldemer and Vilate West on May 30, 1918.

He married his sweetheart, Jean Nelson West, on October 26, 1951 in Elko, Nevada; solemnized in 1958 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Burt was a hardworking man who taught his family the value of hard work. He had so much love for his wife, family, church, and country. He was a devout member of the LDS Church and held every position in the priesthood except for bishop.

He loved scouting and was so proud when he earned his Eagle, Bronze Palm, Gold Palm, and Silver Palm. He was a Scout Master over four scout troops and was on the board of review and chairman of the board.

He served in the Pleasant Grove National Guard and the U.S. Army in the South Pacific; with rank of Staff Sergeant. He got his pilots license and later his commercial air craft license.

Burt loved music, he played the violin, drums in a dance band, and had a beautiful voice. He sang with the Beehive Statesmen for twenty years. He and his wife were beautiful ballroom dancers and later took up square dancing with the promenaders then was elected president of the Tri-Valley Square Dancers Association. He was full of life and would do anything for anyone!

You will truly be missed, you have been a great example of love, leadership, and tender care to our family. We love you, dad!

He is survived by his children, Glady (Dick) Shafer, Dennis (Jeannie) West, Janeen (Leo) Vasquez, and Gary and (Tara) West; combined he had 204 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren and sister, Madge Tatum. Preceded in death by his wife, infant daughter, Gloria; infant son, Burt; sons, little Joe and Shorty; brothers, Ross, Byron, and Harvard; and sisters, Ruby, La Varda, Nellie, and Thelma.

We would like to thank Legacy, Legacy House, and Debbie and her staff at Brighton Hospice for their loving care of our dad.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley Mortuary, 1007 West South Jordan Parkway (10600 South), South Jordan. A viewing will be held prior from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
