Darleene Allen, 94, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Thursday, September 17, 2015, at her home in Columbus.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, September 21, at 2:00 PM at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. Michael Klatt and Rev. Cory Burma officiating. Interment will be at Fr. McPherson National Cemetery on Tuesday, September 22. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Monday from 1:00 PM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Monday at 1:45 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Peace Lutheran Scholarship Program or Platte County ARC.

Darleene Allen was born July 17, 1921, in Randolph, Nebraska, to Jewell and Ellen (Johnson) Killion. Darleene was baptized on December 20, 1921, at her parents’ home, and re-affirmed her Christian faith through confirmation in June 1934 at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield, Nebraska. She graduated from Wakefield High School in 1938. On October 4, 1941, Darleene was united in marriage to Allen Keagle, a United States Navy Pilot. Allen went missing in action on April 5, 1945, after a plane accident over the Pacific Ocean. Darleene went on to earn her teaching degree at Wayne State College in 1947. Darleene taught schools in Dixon County, Omaha, Colfax County, District #82 (now Lost Creek School in Columbus), and finally at Columbus Middle School, retiring in 1986. She continued to do substitute teaching for the Columbus Public Schools until the age of 80.

On June 19, 1949, Darleene was united in marriage to Bill Allen in Omaha. Bill and Darleene were blessed with 66 years of wedded life together. They enjoyed traveling, visiting 46 of the states, and going camping. She loved flowers, gardening, reading, and watching Nebraska volleyball and football. She was a very faithful and involved member of Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus.
