Lenore Clemo Huckins
August 14, 1921 ~ September 4, 2015

Lenore Clemo Huckins of Drain died on September 4 at the age of 94. She was born in Elkton, OR on August 14, 1921, to William Arthur and Fannie Henderer Clemo. She earned a 3-yr certificate in 1942 and a Bachelor of Science degree in 1965. She married Thomas Clement Huckins on June 12, 1943. They divorced, and then remarried on May 27, 1950. They divorced again on September 24, 1974.

Lenore lived mostly in Elkton and Drain, but lived short-term in Bandon and Cottage Grove. Lenore was a dedicated teacher who thought first of her students’ needs. She taught Elementary school for 29 years. She taught K-8, but preferred the intermediate grades. She worked hard as a young girl, sometimes doing the work of a man, like poking wires on the hay baler, measuring grain on the threshing machines, and riding the horse-drawn hay rake. She did her own masonry work at her home on Hwy 38 out of Drain. She learned to sew at an early age, and made most of her daughters’ clothing during their school years. She not only made quilts for her family, she also taught basic quilting for a few years. She enjoyed doing craft work of many kinds, and earlier in life did some painting.

She was elected District Director for her area of Business and Professional Women, and served as secretary for many of the organizations to which she belonged. She was also a member of the Methodist church and the Yoncalla Women’s Study Club. She loved to read and travel, but was not able to do much of this in her later years. Her legacy to her descendants is the writing of the family genealogical history.

She is survived by daughters, Jeannette Harrison of Mt. Vernon, OR, Karen Swearingen of Redmond, OR, and Beverly Harris of Dallas, OR; brother, Lyle Clemo of Boise, ID; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Eileen Charon and Kathleen Smith; and brothers, John, Fred, Armin, Vern and Tom “Chuck.”

Private family inurnment will be in Scottsburg Cemetery. Her ashes will be taken care of by Jeannette Harrison and Patti McAndrew.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Foundation, Arthritis foundation, or a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements in the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.
