Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant of Company F, 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on September 8, 1863. He served as a part of the Cavalry unit until June 19, 1864, when he resigned his commission to accept an appointment to the Adjutant General's Department. Promoted to Captain, he served as an Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General Winfield S. Hancock until his death at City Point, Virginia on August 26, 1864.
