Lorenzo Coveyou, one of Petoskey's longstanding Centennial farmers, passed away on Sept. 4, 2009, in the home where he was born 89 years ago.
He treasured his life with his family and took great joy in farming.
Throughout his lifetime, Lorenzo was a devoted member of St. Francis Xavier parish. Church was a central part of his life with Sunday Mass being the cornerstone of his week. In his youth, he was active in young adult programs and sang for years in the choir.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1947. In addition to his dedication to the church, Lorenzo was a volunteer firefighter, worked on county voting elections, was an accomplished brick mason, pilot and creative Inventor.
Nearly 50 years ago, Lorenzo married Hedy (Jadwiga) Sokolowska on Oct. 17, 1959. They raised four children.
Lorenzo will be remembered by many for his Inspiring qualities; gentle smiles, genuine humility, willingness to help others and his quiet, easy going sense of humor.
Lorenzo was the third generation to farm the land originally homesteaded in 1874. He carried on the farming tradition of his late parents Eugene and Vera Coveyou. Over the decades, he transitioned the farm from dairy to potatoes, cereal grain and eventually garden mums to keep up with the changing times.
In his earlier years, he enjoyed farming and creating innovative machinery. The concept and construction of the first automated potato harvester, years ahead of the Industry, was one of his proudest designs. In his later years, he enjoyed gardening, berry picking, maple syrup production, woodworking and endless projects in his workshop.
Surviving Lorenzo are his wife, Hedy, and their four children, Janet (Bill) Price of Harbor Springs, Michael Coveyou of North Carolina, David (Kathy) Coveyou of Petoskey and Caroline (Keith) Briggs of Wisconsin; along with nine grandchildren. Lorenzo is also survived by three of his sisters, Marlon Cashero of Farmington Hills, Margaret Mcleod of Plymouth, Mich., and Beatrice (Richard) Wiltse of Tucson, Ariz.
The funeral Mass was on Thursday, Sept. 1O, interment followed directly after the funeral Mass at St. Francis Cemetery.
