Benjamin Porter, 84, prominent Logansport resident and former president of the local Porter Drug company, died Monday at the home of his daughter in Winter Haven, Fla. Mr. Porter had been in failing health since suffering a stroke in Florida in November of 1959. His residence here was 801 High St. Born in Clinton township, Cass county, Aug. 30, 1877, he was the son of Alpheus and Amanda Sager Porter. He was married in Logansport on July 22, 1903, to the former Gertrude Lienemann, who survives.

MR. PORTER joined the staff of the Porter drug store in ten years after it was founded by his cousin, W. H. Porter. He purchased an interest in the business in 1908 and became its president upon death of his cousin in 1950. He remained in that position until selling the store in February of 1957. He served as city treasurer from 1904 to 1910. He also was a former member of the county welfare board and an early officer of the Logansport Press corporation. He was a 50-year member of Tipton Lodge No. 33; F. and A. M.; the Elks lodge, and the Calvary Presbyterian church.

Survivors in addition to his widow include two daughters, Mrs. Lewis Clark, at whose home he died in Winter Haven; Mrs. Robert Stewart, Seattle, Wash.; one brother, Albert, 427 Burlington Ave.; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He attended grade and high school in Logansport and graduated from business college here. The body will be returned to this city for funeral services. Rites will be announced at that time.
