Donald James Smith, 70, of Pomeroy, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at his home. Don was born Aug. 2, 1941, to William and Violet Wade Smith in Pomeroy. He was raised and attended Pomeroy schools, graduating in 1960. Don was employed by the Garfield County Road Department, retiring after 30 years. He enjoyed spending time in the Blue Mountains with his wife, camping, hunting, fishing and riding four-wheelers. They also enjoyed trips to Nevada.

Survivors include his only child, Shawn A. Smith and wife Laura of Pomeroy; one grandchild and one great-grandchild; his wife of 25 years, Betty Ann McCanse Zabel; her four children, Alta DesJardin, Crystal Ren, Neosha Guse and Sam Zabel; 11 grandchildren; and one sister, Nancy Smith of Pomeroy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Janis Marie Smith. At Don's request there will be a private service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Don's name to the American Cancer Society, hospice or a charity of donor's choice.
