At the age of 17, Carl Walter was working at Western Grocery Mills. In 1918, at the age of 18, he was working at the Lennox Furnace Company in Marshalltown. By 1925, he was working for the Dunham Company where he worked until his retirement. In the course of his years at Dunham, he worked his way from general employee to store keeper to foreman for Dunham-Bush. Carl played a variety of instruments, including the banjo, mandolin and violin. In his early years played for entertainment including country dances. When Gladys started attending the Assembly of God church, he played in the churches orchestra up until the time of his death.
