Thomas Lamb was the 7th of eight children born to Willis S. Lamb and Mary Elizabeth Pool(e) Lamb in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

His siblings were:
- Kenneth Raynor Lamb (1880- )
- Mattie J. Lamb Overton (1882-1918)
- Frank Willie Lamb (1885- )
- Mamie Lamb Seldon (1889-1933)
- Stephen Saunders Lamb (1891-1956)
- Chauncey Clinton Lamb (1893-1957)
- Cora Lee Lamb (1900- )

He also had an older half-sibling from his mother's previous union:
- Emma Pool(e) Brothers (1879-1869)

As a young man, Thomas relocated to Norfolk, Virginia where he was employed as a waiter and later enlisted in the U. S. Navy. During World War I, Thomas served abroad on board the USS Scorpion (5 Jun 1914-Jan 1919).

In January 1919 he sailed back to the USA from Marseilles, France on board the SS Dante Alighieri arriving back at Port of New York and settling in Brooklyn, New York with family members who had migrated north from Elizabeth City, NC. While he did not marry or have children of his own, he remained close to his family.

He worked as a waiter as long as he physically was able, supplemented by a military disability pension until his early death at age 39 due to complications from injuries sustained during World War I.
