Alfred, widowed, is found in the 1920 Census for Ottumwa, living with his sister, Ellen Halloway.
There were a number of articles in the Ottumwa Daily Couriers about Mr. Marts' death. He was found dead in his second floor room at 302½ Church Street, having been hit over the head with a small sledge hammer.
According to an article in the "Ottumwa Daily Courier," March 21, 1932, Mr. Marts was survived by two sons, Basil Marts and Herman Marts of Portland, Oregon; by one brother, Monroe Marts of Ottumwa; and two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Pixley of Ottumwa and Mrs. Carrie Harsh of Long Beach, Calif. The article also stated that his wife preceded him in death.
