Myrtle Inez Stewart, longtime resident of Newkirk, passed Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at the Ponca City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 98 years of age.

Myrtle was born August 10, 1917 at Antioch, Garvin County Oklahoma. She was born the tenth of eleven children to Crawford Meriweather Brown and Hattie Eugenia (Mitchell) Brown.

Her early education was received in a Bray, Oklahoma country school, later attending Oklahoma State University.

She was married to J.D. Stewart on February 21, 1942 in Rockville, Maryland.

Myrtle had worked at the Pentagon during World War II. The couple had lived in Woodward and Idabel, Oklahoma before moving to Newkirk in 1967.

Myrtle was a longtime member of the Newkirk Presbyterian Church and a longtime supporter of the Chilocco Indian School near Newkirk.

Her enjoyments were playing cards and dominos, fishing, her yard and flowers, and later in life she took a writing class and enjoyed writing about her memories.

She is survived by her four children, Gale Stewart and wife Audry, of San Antonio, Texas, Mike Stewart and wife Karen, of McKinney, Texas, Randy Stewart of Liberal, Kansas and Marjean Fieldhouse and husband Chris, of Austin, Texas;

six grandchildren, Justin, Autumn, Travis, David, Stephanie and Ross; numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband J.D. in 2003; and10 siblings.
