SWEAT Oden "Shorty" Sweat, 82, of Jacksonville passed away July 5, 2009. He was born in Blackshear, GA in 1926 and had resided in Jacksonville since proudly serving as a Corporal in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He continued to serve his country as a Civil Service employee at NAS Jacksonville and retired after 38 years in 1981. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Patsy Fields Sweat, in 1996 and is survived by a grateful and loving family: 1 daughter, Deborah L. Potts; 1 grandson, Rev. Joshua S. Potts; daughter-in-law, Ashley Giddens Potts; two great-grandchildren, Cohen and Claire Potts; son-in- law, Keith J. Potts; brother-in-law, Wesley "Red" Fields; also several very special nieces, nephews, and cousins of Jacksonville, FL, Blackshear, Waycross, and Atlanta, GA; and many close and dear friends and brothers and sisters in Christ. He was a faithful member of Jones Road Baptist Church for many years. Those fortunate enough to know him knew him as a very caring, loving, and generous man. We observed many miracles in his life over the past years and he is now at peace with his Lord and Savior. The family invites friends to celebrate his life Wednesday, July 8th from 4-7PM at GIDDENS-REED FUNERAL HOME, 270 U.S. Highway 301 N., Baldwin, FL for viewing (904-266-2337). Service will be 11AM Thursday at Jones Road Baptist Church, 2506 Jones Rd., Jacksonville with his grandson, Rev. Joshua Potts officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Memorial Park.
