The son of Matthew and Clema Garmon Barnhart, he was born April 23, 1918 in Lavonia, MO. He had lived in Ottumwa since 1923 and worked for John Morrell & Co. for 26 years until it closed in 1973. He had worked for International Harvester in East Moline, Ill., for the past five years.
He served with the Army in Alaska in World War II. He was a member of Willard Street United Methodist Church and O.B. Nelson Post 3 of the American Legion. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 775 and a member of the United Auto Workers. He married Vera Fermaturo in Ottumwa July 13, 1946.
He was survived by his wife; a son, a daughter; two sisters; and a brother.
