PRINCESS ANNE BOY COMMITS SUICIDE BY SHOOTING SELF
Percy W. Murphy, Aged 17, Said To Have Been Despondent Over Loss of Leg
Ill health was advanced as the motive of the suicide yesterday afternoon of Percy W. Murphy, 17, who shot himself in the right temple shortly after 5:30 o'clock after waiting on a customer at his father's filling station on the Pungo road in Princess Anne County.
Young Murphy died a few minutes after the arrival of Dr. W. A. Nicholson, of Creeds. Several persons were in the station at the time the boy stepped outside and around the side of the building to end his life.
After investigating the case, Dr. R. E. Whitehead, coroner for Princess Anne County, announced a verdict of "suicide by a pistol shot in the right temple." A note, which was almost illegible, was turned over to Sheriff John A. Litchfield.
Parents of the boy, who recently established their residence in Princess Anne County, were at a loss to furnish a motive for the suicide, but added that the boy had been feeling badly for some time. He often grieved, they said, over the disability of having one foot. His left leg was amputated at the knee several years ago because of a tubercular-bone condition.
The boy's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Fetcher R. Murphy, recently came to Princess Anne County from Tennessee.
