NOTATION: Death Date - Benjamin died after 1866 and before 1870 in Calhoun County, Alabama where the family was living.

Benjamin was born about 1810 as per the census of 1810 for Pickens County, South Carolina, then known as Pendleton District. Benjamin was the son of Sargent and Avarilla Barton Griffin. Benjamin and five of his brothers, William Monroe, Barton, Sargent, Jr., Richard Harrison and Bailey, moved from South Carolina to settle in Benton (now called Calhoun) County, Alabama. The family believes that his grave is in the Shiloh Cemetery on Highway 204, Calhoun County near the graves of his brothers and many related Griffins. Shiloh is filled with unmarked graves - marked only by mountain rocks, etc. Benjamin married in South Carolina to Fanny Brown and they became parents of one son, Lewis Brown Griffin. Fanny was a daughter of Lewis Brown of Pickens County, SC. Benjamin married second on April 13, 1837 to Mrs. Mary Y. Moody Meharg, in Benton County, Alabama-now called Calhoun Co., AL. Mary was the widow of John Meharg. Benjamin and Mary Griffin were parents of five children: Dorcas E. Griffin, Richard Sargent Griffin, Henry M. Griffin, Sarah A. Griffin and Andrew Griffin. Dorcas married Robert Y. Browning (died in CSA) and she married Thomas J. Thornton and lived in Calhoun Co., AL, Arkansas and Texas. Dorcas married Joseph F. Martin 1879 in Conway Co., Arkansas and they are buried in Tyler Co., Texas. Richard Sargent Griffin is buried in Pickens Co., Alabama. Henry Melmeth Griffin is buried in Craighead Co., Arkansas. Sarah Griffin married Marion Varnon. She is buried in Lamar County, Alabama. Andrew "Andy" Griffin and his wife, Susan, moved to Red River County, Texas where they and a baby died in 1882 and 1883.
