Parents: Sargent Griffin and Avarilla Barton Griffin buried in Griffin Baptist Church Cemetery, Pickens Co., SC. Both of his grandfathers. William Griffin and Benjamin Barton, were Revolutionary War soldiers.

Sargent Griffin moved from Pickens, South Carolina with five other brothers to Benton/Calhoun County, Alabama. Sargent married on July 6, 1847 in Benton Co., AL to Miss Rebecca Zaine Rose Putman and they had seven children: Lucinda (J.S. Shurbutt); Syntha Ann (Jessie Berry Gray); Edward Pinkney "Pink" (Amanda Akridge); Charlotte (W.F. Harmon); Emily (Jonas Swink & Clement Jowers); Madison H. (Clementine Read); and Averilla "Avie" (William G. Little.) After the death in 1860 of Rebecca Putnam Griffin, Sargent married a widow, Mrs. Martha J. South, in Benton Co., AL on August 12, 1863. Sargent Griffin gave land for a school house and the church where he served as a deacon called Ten Island Baptist Church and land for the Ten Island Cemetery where Sargent is buried as well as many of his family members.
