YORKTOWN — Marjorie Schlegel, 94, resident of Yorktown, passed away at Yorktown Manor in Yorktown on Aug. 17, 2015.

She was born in Aug. 11, 1921, Elwood, the daughter of Anna and William Humrichaus, but was adopted by Joe and Zilpha Beeson following the death of her father.

In an era when many women did not seek higher education, Marjorie worked to put herself through college. Her jobs included assembly line at Delco Remy, operator for Bell Telephone, and waitress at The Alibi.

She graduated from Ball State School of Nursing in 1950. Shortly thereafter she married Ralph Schlegel of Daleville and placed her education on hold to raise five children. As a result of her emphasis on education, all five of her children graduated from college, four becoming teachers.

Marjorie was an excellent cook and became known for her sugar cream pies. She supported the farm efforts raising chickens and feeding livestock. Later she became the first full-time school nurse for the Daleville Schools, a position she held for more than 20 years.

She volunteered her time assisting with Vacation Bible School, co-leading Girls Scouts and as a Sunday school teacher. She was a longtime member of the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Ladies Aide and Community Club. She served as deaconess at the Daleville Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Virgil and Ralph Humrichaus; husband, Ralph Schlegel; and a son-in-law, Mark Lestik.

She is survived by sisters, Margaret Watson and Leota Clark; children, Jo Barrett (Norm), Pat Schlegel (Diana), Lee Lestik, Susie Reed (Rodney) and Betsy Simmer (Mike); 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A Celebration of her life will be held on Saturday at the Daleville Christian Church at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Gary McManus officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Daleville.
