OTTUMWA — Jerry Oneal Bishop passed away Sunday, January 14, 2007 at 3:05 p.m. He was at home with his wife and family at his side.

Jerry was born on June 17, 1935 in Buffalo, SC to Roy and Madge Bishop. Jerry was united in marriage with the former Joyce Dowd on July 16, 1955 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ottumwa, IA.

He grew up in Buffalo, SC before joining the Air Force in 1954. Following assignments in Japan, Hawaii, Vietnam, England and various stations throughout the U.S., Jerry retired from the Air Force in 1977 after 23 years of proud service.

Jerry and Joyce returned to the Ottumwa area to raise their family. He attended Indian Hills for a time before working for Kmart and eventually went on to retire from the Ottumwa Courier in 1997. He enjoyed woodworking and genealogy during his retirement. However, his greatest joy came from spending time and playing with his grandsons.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Joyce Dowd Bishop; three sons, Dusty Bishop of Fairfield, Matthew (Robin) Bishop of Fort Dodge and Josh (Maki) Bishop of Fairfield; three grandsons, Gabriel, Justin and Kellen Bishop; two brothers, Jack (Betty) Bishop of Arden, NC and Rodger (Margaret) Bishop of Sumter, SC; a sister, Joan (Don) Lawson of Pacolet, SC and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Phil Griffith officiating.

Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to Hospice, 312 E. Alta Vista, Ottumwa or McCreery Cancer Center.
