Helen Carole (Abt) Thornton of Winfield, Kan., died on June 12, 2015.
The daughter of Ludwig and Jessie (Armstrong) Abt, she was born on Jan. 30, 1925, in Moberly, Mo. Her father was a German immigrant who became a well-known architect in central Missouri, her mother was a homemaker.
She was a graduate of Fontbonne College in St. Louis, Mo., and earned a degree at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan. For many years she was a dietician at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.
In 1949 she married Charles Joseph Thornton of Winfield, Kan., who preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1993.
Helen was a devoted member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield. A lifelong lover of nature and animals, she helped establish and volunteered at the Cowley County Humane Society. Many friends and family members treasure her colorful and detailed art works including painted gourds and found objects, signed "HAT."
She is survived by her sister Rosa Lu Plambeck of Florrisant, Mo.; children David Joel Thornton and wife Mary, Seattle, Wa.; Charles Roch Thornton and wife Daphne, Overland Park, Kan.; Musia Nanette Thornton, Denver, Co.; William Jeffrey Thornton and wife Stephanie, Shawnee, Kan.; and grandson Joseph Rafe Thornton, Kansas City, Mo.
