Obituary from "Ottumwa Courier," August 14, 1909:
KILLED IN MINES
While driving a mule in the mines at Wright, a coal camp near Des Moines, Charles Shelly [sic], 302 South Moore street, fell or was thrown from the car on which he rode and was killed yesterday shortly after the dinner hour. The parents of the young man, Mr. and Mrs. John Shelley, as well as a brother, E.G. Shelley, live in Ottumwa and one brother, John Shelley resides at Mystic.
The remains were shipped by the Rock Island today from Des Moines and are expected to arrive this afternoon about 4 o'clock. A sad feature in the death of the young man is the fact that his mother is at present visiting relatives in Ohio and his father engaged in threshing and harvest work near Rome. The funeral arrangements are not yet settled.
