He first started working in Sterlington, Louisiana for Mobil Oil Co. and then for Louisiana Power and Light Co. He worked in East Texas for Humble Oil Co. then moved to South Texas on June 19, 1935 and worked in the refineries. 1935-1936 he worked as an oilfield hauler for J. I. Hailey, Joe D. Hughes, Brown & Root, Inc. all three companies to build the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Kingsville, and Beeville N.A.S. He also worked for W. S. Pop King and Jess Edwards. John hauled oil rigs to Arizona, Farmington New Mexico, and Colorado in mountains 20 degrees below. He then went to into business for himself in 1955 as J. H. Spurlock Trucking Company until he retired and sold his business in 1969.
John was preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Pearlie Mae Spurlock. He was also preceded in death by his brothers: J.D., Leroy, A.C., Jeames, Henry, Luther, Murrel, J.L., and three sisters; Willie Powell, Palmer Spillers, and Morine Spurlock.
He is survived by his second wife, Betty Jean Spurlock of 14 years. They lived in Corpus Christi until the last 4 years that they resided in Odem, Texas. John is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
He will be dearly missed by many. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your favorite charity.
A visitation will be held at Seaside Funeral Home January 28, 2005. Funeral Services will be celebrated at The Church of Christ in Odem, Texas January 29, 2005. Friends are welcome to visit prior to the funeral. Entombment will follow at Seaside Memorial Park that same day.
