He was a member of the Odem Church of Christ.
J. L. was born and raised in Louisiana, but came to South Texas as a young man to raise his family. He was an avid fisherman, baseball lover, gardener and will always be remembered with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his deep blue eyes. He was loved by and loved his wife, children, and grandchildren. His family loved him, friends adored him and he will be deeply missed.
J. L. is preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Vada Pearl Spurlock; seven brothers, two sisters and beloved daughter, Mary Jo "Jody" Brooks. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 50 years, Bobby Jean; his children, two sons of Corpus Christi, Texas, and a daughter of Odem Texas; one sister, Palmer Spillers of Downsville, Louisiana; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2002 at Ritchea-Gonzales Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services to follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Odem, Texas.
