Rev. Andrew Bloxam was the fourth son of Rev. Richard Rouse Bloxam, who was a schoolmaster at Rugby School, in Warwickshire, and Ann Lawrence, who was the sister of the painter Sir Thomas Lawrence. He was educated at Rugby School from 1809, and Worcester College, Oxford from 1820.

In the autumn of 1824, he was appointed as a naturalist on board H.M.S Blonde, commanded by Capt. Lord Byron, cousin of the poet George Gordon Byron. His brother, R. Rowland Bloxam (1798–1877), was the chaplain. The voyage lasted over 18 months, during which time he visited South America and various islands of the Pacific, including the Galápagos Islands, and the Hawaiian Islands (then called the Sandwich Islands). Most of Bloxam's collections during the voyage eventually found their way to the British Museum.

After returning from the voyage on 15th March 1826, he was ordained on 25th June 1826 (Trinity Sunday), as a Church of England minister. He spent some time in Leicestershire, and as a curate in Atherstone, in Warwickshire, before he became the Vicar of Twycross, in Leicestershire (1840). He remained there until 1871, when he was made Vicar of Radford Semele, and shortly afterwards Rector of Harborough Magna, where he died on 2nd February 1878.

DEATH OF REV. A. BLOXAM - Leamington Spa courier - 9th February 1878
************************************************************************
Barely twelve month have elapsed since we noted, with regret, the death of the Rev. Rowland Bloxam, Vicar of Harleston, and well known in Leamington. We have now to add to the sad obituary of the year the name of his brother, Rev. Andrew Bloxam, Vicar of Harborough Magna, in this county, and whilom (formerly) Vicar of Radford.

To botanists the name of the Rev. Andrew Bloxam is familiar throughout the kingdom; from a young age had devoted himself to the study of plants, and at a comparatively early age was appointed by the Government naturalist to a Discovery Expedition, to which his brother, Rowland, acted as chaplain.

During a long residence at Twycross, Radford, and at Harborough Magna, deceased spent much of the small leisure he could spare from his pastoral duties in pursuing his favourite study. He was a good preacher, a Christian gentleman, and a gentle pastor, full of kind words and sympathy. He was the brother of Mr. Matthew Bloxam F.S.A., the distinguished antiquary, and of our townsman, the Rev. Thomas Lawrence Bloxam. His mother was sister to the famous President of the Royal Academy (Sir Thomas Lawrence), and his father one of the masters of Rugby School, and Vicar of Brinklow. His grandfather was a physician at Alcester, and his ancestors were connected with some of the old landed gentry of Warwickshire, and claimed descent from the Lady Godiva herself.

The deceased was one of ten children, of whom five now remain, and of these four have attained the aged of three score years and ten (70). The labours and collections of such a patient worker and observer as Mr. Andrew Bloxam are but little know to the public, but they add much to the sum of human knowledge, though they publish not big books nor shine in the lecture room. His friends regret him, the poor mourn him, and his county will miss him.
