Alan Rutherfurd Stuyvesant was the younger son of Rutherfurd Stuyvesant and his second wife. He spent a significant amount of time in Europe during his childhood. His father died unexpectedly while in Paris on July 4, 1909. His mother was subsequently remarried to Prince Alexandre de Caraman-Chimay, the son of the 18th Prince de Chimay and younger brother of the 19th Prince.

Alan Rutherfurd Stuyvesant never married. He was a member of the American Field Service Volunteers, 1940-1942; and served as a Captain in the U.S. Army, 1943-1945. He died aboard a ship just prior to its arrival in France.
