Lewis Rutherfurd Stuyvesant was the elder son of Rutherford Stuyvesant and his second wife. He spent a significant amount of time in Europe during his childhood. His father died unexpectedly while in Paris on July 4, 1909. His mother was subsequently remarried to Prince Alexandre de Caraman-Chimay, the son of the 18th Prince de Chimay and younger brother of the 19th Prince.

Lewis Rutherfurd Stuyvesant was married in 1925 to Rosalie Stuyvesant Pillot5, the daughter of Peter Stuyvesant Pillot. They had one child, Peter Winthrop Rutherfurd Stuyvesant (1935–1970), before they divorced in 1930. He later married Elizabeth (Larocque) Smith in 1934, the former wife of Schuyler Knowlton Smith and the daughter of Joseph Laroque.

Lewis Rutherford Stuyvesant served as an American field service volunteer, 1940-1942; and as a 1st Lieutenant, USMCR, 1943-1944.

Although his tombstone records his date of birth as August 4, 1907, his death certificate indicates he was born August 1, 1903. The 1903 year of birth appears to be correct as it is corroborated by other records. A 1919 passport application has his date of birth, given by his mother, as occurring on August 4, 1903.
