John was the son of John Fultz and Mary Crow. He married Caroline Simons on 22 JUN 1852 in Petersburg, Alleghany, Maryland. They were the parents of They were the parents of 12: Mary Ann (Flack), Balzer Bass, Julia Ann (Diehl), Catherine Elizabeth (Chapin), Barbara Estella (Canon), Margaret, John, George, Charles, and Clara Ellen (Foell).

April 10, 1908 - Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - The death of John Fultz, Sr., occurred late Tuesday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Foell in Hayes township, after an illness which has extended over several months. He was a very old man and his powers of recuperation were therefore almost gone.

Mr. Fultz was born in Germany, he came to this vicinity to be near his children a year ago last fall from Allamakee county.

The funeral is to be held from the Methodist Episcopal church on Friday afternoon at 2:30 and interment will be made in the Storm Luke cemetery. An obituary of his life will be published next week.


April 10, 1908 - Storm Lake Buena Vista Vidette - Died, April 7, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Foell in Hayes township, John Fultz, aged 82 years. He had been quite ill for about two months.

The funeral will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon. A short service will be held at the home at one o'clock and the funeral will he held at the Methodist in Storm Lake at 1:30. The deceased has made his home with his daughter Mrs. Foell for some time. He was an estimable man and the sincere sympathy of many friends goes out to the bereaved relatives.


April 17, 1908 - Storm Lake Buena Vista Vidette - John Fultz, whose death we recorded last week, was born in Germany, June 26th, 1826. In the year 1835 he came with his parents to Maryland. In 1851 he married Caroline Simon, who survives him.

To this union were born 12 children, nine with his wife survive him. The sons are John Fultz of Missouri, Bass Fultz of near Storm Luke, Charles Fultz of La Porte, Iowa and George Fultz of this city. The daughters are Mrs. Mary Flack, of Missouri; Mrs. Julia Diehl, of Storm Lake; Mrs. Clara Foell, of Hayes township; Mrs. Kate Chapin, of eastern, Iowa; Mrs. Barbara Cannon of near Storm Lake. Deceased also leaves one brother Bass Fultz of Waukon, Iowa.

Three children, one in young womanhood and two in infancy preceded him in death.

In 1852 the family moved from Maryland to Allamakee county, Iowa, where all but two of their twelve children were born to them and grew to manhood and womanhood on the old home place. At fourteen years of age, he was confirmed and joined the Lutheran church. Several years later, he and his wife united with the Presbyterian church of which he was an active earnest member until he came here over a year ago to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Foell.

His family well remember him as an earnest and devout Bible student, possessing the ability to a remarkable degree of quoting passages and repeating whole chapters of scripture. He lived an exemplary life, worthy of emulation, unselfishly devoted to his family and friends and will be remembered as clean and abstemious in his habits. It gave him great satisfaction that all his children were present during his sickness.
