He received his commission through the Southern University Reserve Officer Training Corps and was in the Army for 30 years. He served as a platoon commander during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Korea, Italy and Germany. He received the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, the Unit Citation Badge, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and medals for service in the Vietnam counteroffensive Phase V, the Vietnam counteroffensive Phase VI and the TET 1969 counteroffensive.
