Death of Andrew Augur Removes Christian County's Oldest Resident -- Came West in 1839

TAYLORVILLE, ILL. August 23--Andrew L. Augur, who had lived in Christian county longer than any other living man, died at 10 o'clock Sunday night at his home in Mosquito township, from the infirmities of old age, after a two weeks' illness.

Mr. Augur was a pioneer of Christian county. He located here over seventy years ago, and through the intervening years had seen it develop from a wilderness into a fertile and rich community. He early saw the inevitable and began acquiring land, and at his death owned large tracts of land in Mosquito and Mt. Auburn townships. He helped to organize the First National bank of Taylorville and was its first vice president from its organization until his death.

Andrew was born November 9, 1825 at Chester, Conn. and at his death was in his eight-fourth year. In 1839, when he was 14, he came to Illinois and settled at Mount Auburn. Soon afterward he moved to Mosquito township, locating upon the farm where his death occurred.

April 7, 1843, Mr. Augur was married to Miss Emily Sharp near Grove City. His widow and four children are surviving: John W. Augur of Mosquito township; Cal Luther Augur of Mosquito township; Mrs. Mary Butcher, wife of Royal Butcher of Mosquito township, and Mrs. Amanda J. Parish of Stonington township.

One brother, William Augur, of Mount Auburn township is also surviving.

Funeral services: 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at the family residence
Interment in Mount Auburn Cemetery.
