Herman was the son of William Schumann and Emelie Lenz.

August 11, 1910 - The Fonda Times - Considerable excitement was created in town Tuesday forenoon when the word was passed around that a fellow had hung himself in the city jail. Upon investigation we found the report was true in every respect. The young man was about twenty-six years of age and lived in the neighborhood of Varina.

His name was Herman Schumann and was known to many of our people. He had been arrested at Spirit Lake early Tuesday morning by deputy Sheriff S.L. Cole of Storm Lake and was being taken to Storm Lake where he was to have stood trial for the crime of incest.

The coroner at Rolfe was notified and he came to this place as soon as possible and an inquest was held. The Coroner, Mr. McIntyre of Rolfe, came over in an automobile and empanelled a jury, consisting of Henry Sullivan, John Gesy and Chris Davis, the inquest being held in the upstairs room of the furniture store.

Three witnesses were examined — Frank Eaton, Dr. Dower and S.L. Cole, the man that had him in charge. After the evidence had been given the following verdict was given by the jury. "We, said jurors, upon oath, do say that we find that said deceased come to his death by suicide by hanging with a leather strap from the door of the steel cage from the city jail. (Signed) H. Sullivan, John Gesy and C.H. Davis."

The body was taken care of by Mr. DeWitt, the undertaker, and was taken to the home of his mother in Varina yesterday morning
