He was the son of the late Paul and Helen (Smith) Ackerman.
Charles was retired from Black & Decker in Maryland and was also a home builder. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Air Force as an airplane mechanic. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hanover, McSherrystown Fish & Game Association, Littlestown Senior Center, and the New Oxford Rod & Gun Club. He was a life member of the McSherrystown Home Association, McSherrystown Moose, and the McSherrystown Knights of Columbus.
He was the husband of Bernadette "Kit" (Carbaugh) Ackerman, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage, and also surviving are two daughters, Faye Brummett of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Pamela McMaster of Hanover; a son, Kevin Ackerman of Hanover; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Susan M. Ackerman and Louise B. Smith.
Burial was with full military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
