Joyce "Irene" (Olson) Boswell, daughter of August and Annie (Jorgenson) Olson, was born February 10, 1906 at Rural Hayti, South Dakota. She spent her early years in Hamlin County and graduated from Hayti High School in 1924. She attended Aberdeen Normal School, receiving her two year teaching certificate and taught rural schools for four years. After her marriage to Ben Boswell on July 5, 1929 at Bryant, South Dakota, she continued to teach in Hamlin County for two years. She and Ben published the Hamlin County Republican Paper for 12 years and later owned and operated Boswell Hardware and then owned and operated the Sundry Store. Ben died on March 1, 1976 in Watertown, South Dakota and Irene moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake in July of 1990. She died there on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at the age of 97 years, 3 months and 11 days.

She is survived by one niece and six nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, six sisters, Olga Brown, Grace Buckstead, Hazel Oines, Libbie Amerson, Adeline Wendling and Clara Olson and two brothers, Russell and Ernest Olson.

Interment Castlewood Cemetery, Castlewood, South Dakota.
