He was the second of ten children born to Joseph Claggett and Edna Middleton. He was survived by his wife; one daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, five sisters and two brothers. He was preceded in death by his son, Alfred "Sam" Claggett, and two sisters; Adelle Avent, and Edna Mae Brown.
