His obituary appeared in the Monroe News-Star June 4, 1927, Page 5, Column 3. It states S.A. Nalley died at his home in Monroe from typhoid pneumonia.

He was the son of Ben Nalley who was the principal of Methodist Female college at Waco for 42 years. His mother Bell Shook taught there for 22 years.

He was born in Hill County, TX and had lived in Monroe since 1916. He was survived by his wife Beatrice [This is his second wife. His first wife was Blanche Lynch], three daughters: Hazel, Mabel, and Willie.

His brothers were Dot, Euchre and Sam and his sisters were Montie, Treaty, Orange and a sister Beulah who died in infancy.

The date of birth recorded from Shook's headstone appears to be in error. He appears on the 1870 McClennon County, TX census as a 1 year old in his parents household. He claims to have been born in March, 1870 on the 1900 census.

Shook's second wife Mary Beatrice (according to her obituary) is also buried in Hasley, but no marker can be found. She may be buried in an unmarked grave next to her husband.

His headstone is listed in a 1993 index between Lena C. Smith and Rev. P.E. Pilcher in "Section Two - [West end north of back blacktop circle]".
