Eleonora Elizabeth (Eleo Beth), the only child and daughter of Joseph and Eleonora Marie (Haffener) Schneider, was born Aug. 16, 1921, on a farm west of Salina on State Street Road. Her baptismal sponsors were Joseph Schneider and Elizabeth (Hamer) Schneider, her grandparents.

Eleo Beth Schneider Brown received her education from Sacred Heart Grade and High School (class of 1939); and received a bachelor’s degree from Marymount College in Salina. For more than 40 years, she worked as a bookkeeper and secretary in various offices in Salina, starting out with M.J. Kennedy (while Cotton Coe was a silent partner) at Kennedy and Coe. Other offices included Roy Omer of Mutual of Omaha, George Kaufman Insurance, Richmond and Glover before it included Barbee and Schmidt; Msgr. John A. Duskie, rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral; St. Mary’s Grade School (12 years); The Office Assistant–Phyllis VonFange; and 12 years at Great Plains Mutual Insurance Co., Inc., retiring in 1990. Beth also did private secretarial work.

On Aug. 9, 1951, Eleo Beth married Michael Charles Brown, also a SHHS class of 1939 classmate, at Sacred Heart Cathedral. The marriage ceremony was performed by Father Cosmas (Leo) Schneider, O.S.B., her uncle from Atchison.

Survivors include her children, James J. Brown, of the home, and Jane Ann Brown, O.P.A., of St. Louis; first cousins, Mrs. Mary Ryan, of New Cambria, Sr. Lucy (Agnes) Schneider, C.S.J., of Concordia, and Mrs. Dorothy (Al) Edwards, of Sherwood, Ark. There are also many other cousins and relatives and many friends. Her two close pet dogs are Daisey and Itty Bitty.

Eleo Beth enjoyed and participated in many organizations during her lifetime. She was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish and Council of Catholic Women, as well as Catholic Daughters of America. She was a longtime member of Salina Regional Health Center Service Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and Native Daughters-Saline Co. Chapter; and she enjoyed the companionship and friendship of her neighbors (District 26) West Side Country Club. She also enjoyed her membership to Central Kansas Flywheels and Yesteryear Museum. Eleo Beth greatly enjoyed the Tuesday evening concerts given by Salina Municipal Band in Oakdale Park, Eric Stein Stage.

Eleo Beth Schneider Brown died peacefully in her sleep Saturday morning, July 4, 2015, at the age of 93 years.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 7 at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401. There will be a vigil service at 6 Tuesday evening at Ryan Mortuary and will include a rosary by the Knights of Columbus. There will be a Catholic Daughters rosary at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Salina.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, with Father Don Zimmerman, Father Robert “Bob” Schneider and Monsignor James Hake as celebrants. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Salina.

The family suggests memorials to Sacred Heart High School Endowment Fund, Sacred Heart Cathedral or Sisters of St. Joseph, in care of Ryan Mortuary, Salina.
