His father was associated with the Prophet Joseph
Smith, and worked as a carpenter on the
construction of the Kirtland Temple. The
Campbells were driven with the Saints from
Kirtland in 1845 and went to Nauvoo, Illinois
where they spent one winter.
n 1846 the Campbell family left Nauvoo with the
Saints and began their westward exodus. They
stopped first in Mount Pisgah where several of
the family died including Joel Campbell, brother
of Benoni, 11 August 1846. His name is among the
few that are listed on the historical marker at
that place.
From Mount Pisgah the Campbell family moved on to
Council Bluffs where Benoni's brother Jonathan
and his(Benoni) son Samuel enlisted into the
Mormon Battalion on 16 July 1846. Benoni and Mary
were never to see either of them again in their

Samuel was the nephew of U.S. Mormon battalion
companion Jonathan Campbell. After joining the
battalion, he was never to see his parents again,
as they died of cholera on the trail near Salt
Creek, Nebraska in their journey toward Salt

Company July 16, 1847, at Los Angeles, Cal.
After mustering out at Los Angeles, he returned
to Salt Lake in 1849. He married 2 May 1849
Clarisa Rebecca Frances Hall in Salt Lake City.
They arrived in Salt Lake 1 October 1850
