James B. Boston
Company F, 53rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry

James answered the call of his country to save the Union and enlisted at Somonauk Illinois on 1/1/1862 as a Private. He was mustered into "F" Co. ILL 53rd Infantry

He and his unit saw some extremely hard fighting and many hardships. James B. Boston was wounded at the Battle of Hatchie's Bridge (the battlefield site, known as Davis Bridge Battlefield, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998) near Bolivar Tennessee. James was shot through by a musket ball and was gravely wounded after some time a in a field hospital near the battle field he was sent to Benton Barracks General Hospital, St Louis Mo. His wife Caroline left the family in Illinois and went to St. Louis and became a nurse there, tending James and hundreds of other wounded and sick soldiers.

James recovered but never sufficiently to return to combat. and did return to duty at Benton Barracks as a doctor's helper. Finally he was discharged April 6, 1864 as a corporal, unfit for combat or for the invalid Corps.

James Boston was born in Akron, Ohio, January 30, 1834, and died at his home in Smith county, Kansas, October 2, 1924 aged 90 years, 8 months and 2 days.

After his discharge he and his family homesteaded land in southeast Nebraska before moving to Smith County Kansas around 1893.
