ELLERSLIE — Earl Harold Smith, 83, of King’s Grove Road, Ellerslie, died on Tuesday, June 5, 2005, at his residence. Born on Jan. 29, 1922, in Madley, Bedford County, Pa., he was a son of the late Edward Henry and Josie Ann (Shroyer) Smith. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Allen, Charles and Carl Smith; and sister, Marcelle Elliott. Surviving are Izola R. (Imler) Smith, his wife of nearly 64 years, whom he married Aug. 31, 1941; sons, Earl F. Smith and wife Shirley (Shipe), LaVale, Robert H. “Bob” Smith and wife Charlotte (Lehr), Hyndman, and Richard L. “Flick” Smith and wife Debbie (Vadnais), Ellerslie; daughter, Brenda E. Scritchfield and husband William, Ellerslie; brothers, Homer Smith, Cresaptown, Glenn Smith and wife Margaret, Detroit, Mich., Ray Smith and wife Elaine, Jennerstown, and Lee Smith and wife Shirley, Madley; sisters, Peggy Hagen and husband Fred, Bedford, and Linda Holler and husband Kenny, Schellsburg; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and participated in the Philippine Liberation and the military occupation of Nagasaki after the atomic bombing. He was a member of the Oscar Jordan Post VFW, Hyndman. In 1974, he retired from Sears, Roebuck and Company, in Cumberland, where he had worked as a delivery driver. Mr. Smith was a member of the City of Refuge Church of God, Cumberland. He had served the church as an elder and a trustee, and he was among those who laid the foundation blocks for the church building. Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Jason Smith officiating. Interment will be in Madley Cemetery, Madley, where military honors will be conferred by VVA Chapter 172. Cumberland Times-News, July 6, 2005
