Two End Own Lives in Span of a Night

Despondency over ill-health and advanced age was given as the reson for the suicides of two men Wednesday and today. Frank M. Chase, more than 70 years old, 1027 avenue northwest, swallowed a teaspoonful of strychine in his home at 6:30 a.m. today and died in a few minutes. The other was Josef Bednar, about 78, 613 C avenue northeast who was found dead in a chair near a gas stove with the burners opened wide at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Bednar lived alone at 613 C avenue northeast and was last seen alive late Tuesday night by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Drahos, 621 Fifth avenue sourtheast, who had visited in his home. He had seemed in good spirits and told them to return Wednesday at which time he would give them some carrots. This occasioned their visit at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Bednar had been dead several hours, in the opinion of Coroner R. A. Vorpahl, who pronounced the case a suicide. Bednar had not been in the best of health and a note left on a table proved that he had planned his act.
His body was taken to Barta's mortuary, in accordance with his instructions, to await funeral arrangements. The note was pinned to an insurance policy, the receipts from which were to be used to pay expenses, after which the remaining money was to be turned over to his son, Josef, Jr. 1601 L street southwest.
He is survived by eight children; Frank, Tony and Joseph, jr. all of Cedar Rapids; Mrs Emma Lynch, Independence, Mrs Anna Sawyer, Chicago; Mrs Mary Marsh, Rockford, Ill; Mrs Rose Luchterhand, and Mrs Tillie Sediacek, both of Cedar Rapids. He was a member of Mladoceck Lodge, Z. C. B. J.
Funeral services will be held in the Barta chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday conducted by the Rev. F. D. Chada. Burial will be in Roger's Grove cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel Friday evening.
