(If his birth year is correct, it would seem unlikely that he enlisted at the age of ten The war with Mexico was from 1846 to 1848). He served on the Brig. Dolphin for nine months and was transferred to the Brig. Summers.
Also served on the ships Independence and Brig. Potomac.
Discharged in 1845.
In 1847 in New York City, he enlisted for 3 years in the Mexican war. Discharged in 1849.
On August 22, 1861, he enlisted at Jacksonville, IL for 3 months in Company C.

Married Martha Rust on April 23, 1862 in Morgan county, IL.
Survived by his wife, Martha; and five children: Mrs. G. F. Sutton of Chicago; W. R. Mitchell of St. Louis, MO; L. C. Mitchell of Springfield, IL; Grace and Leah Mitchell of Jacksonville, IL.
