A native of Madison County, having lived most of his life in Canton, he had moved to Marion, NC four years ago. He was the son of the late James William and Carrie Gregory Shelton. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sheena Lynn Thompson. He was a contractor and builder for Bruce Brown for many years. He was a member of Faith Tabernacle in Marion.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lillian Rhinehart Shelton; four daughters, Peggy Thompson, Mary Jo Woodby, and Linda Gail Prince, all of Marion, and Patricia Noel of Canton; two sons, Donnie H. Shelton of Marion and Bobby Shelton of Canton; three sisters, Rose Mary Foster, Margaret Rathbone, and Mildred ''Freda'' Suttles, all of Marion; three brothers, Claude Shelton of Clyde, Dean and Clyde Shelton of Marion; 21 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2003 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville with Reverend Dean Owenby officiating. Burial followed at New Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Newfound Road. Grandsons served as pallbearers.
