Giles Gifford was a son of Abraham and Lucy Sherman Gifford. Abraham and Lucy and their family moved from Rensselaer County, New York to Niagara, now Erie County, before 30 March 1814 when they were accepted as members of the Eden Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends. Nearly all the children except for Giles migrated west to Ohio and Michigan. Giles married Annis Reynolds and remained on the family homestead.

The inscription on his tombstone reads:

Giles Gifford Died Apr 2 1890, aged 80 Yrs 1 Mo & 12 D's
