Born in Canada, son of Abraham Townsend. Married Malinda Brown in Feb. 1825 in Huron Co., OH. In 1826, emigrated to Michigan with Israel Markum and others who had two yoke of oxen. He had a yoke with a horse hitched ahead of them. (Biography in History of Cass Co., MI). Later married, after wife died, Charlotte Hunter in 1841. Had children Statta, Abraham, Gamaliel, John H., Otis, Claudius, Agnes, Lewis, Candice and George.

Gamaliel was nearly blind before he died. In 1832, he served as Lt. in the milita when Sauk or Black Hawk War broke out. He kept the first post office in LaGrange was a pioneer of that area and greatly respected.
