Sportscaster. He thrilled sports fans for over 20 years with his gravel-voiced, rapid-fire accounts of horse races. McCarthy made his first radio broadcast from Churchill Downs at Louisville, Kentucky in 1928, for station KYW in Chicago. In 1929 he joined NBC, where he worked for 18 years, while for CBS he covered every Kentucky Derby from 1928 to 1950. In addition to horse racing, he also covered a number of major prize fights. One of his most famous fights was the bout between heavyweight champion Joe Louis and Max Schmeling, at New York's Madison Square Garden, in 1938. He was inducted into the American Sportscasters Hall of Fame in 1987.
